Cedar's natural oils give it real resistance to decay, and powder-coated steel's finish is specifically engineered for sustained outdoor exposure. The structures that don't last are usually the ones where maintenance was skipped entirely, not ones where the "wrong" material was chosen.

A cedar playhouse or swing set tends to read as a natural extension of a yard with existing trees, garden beds, or wood fencing — it doesn't compete visually with the landscape. A metal set, especially in a solid color, can stand out more as a defined "play zone," which some families actually prefer because it's visually distinct from the rest of the yard.
